GROWING INSTRUCTIONS

Planting Your Irises

Plant anytime from midsummer to early autumn after flowering. Choose a sunny spot with at least 6 hours of sun and well-draining soil. Loosen the soil, dig a shallow 4" hole, and add bone meal if available. Create a small mound in the center, place the rhizome on top with roots spreading down the sides, then gently backfill with soil. The top of the rhizome should be barely covered or left exposed to prevent rot. Press soil down and water in. Space large irises 12-24" apart to accommodate spreading. Water every 7-10 days while establishing. Consider mulching lightly with straw or evergreen boughs before the first winter for protection.

Care & Maintenance

Avoid heavy mulching around established plants to keep rhizomes dry and prevent rot. Remove spent flowers to redirect energy from seed production. Let foliage grow all summer unless diseased, then cut back to 6-8" in fall if desired. Clean up dead leaves in spring and ensure rhizome tops get air exposure. Divide every 3-5 years after flowering to prevent overcrowding. Water once every week or two during dry spells once established. If fertilizing, use low nitrogen or balanced fertilizer (6-10-10 or 10-10-10) in early spring and after flowering, applying around the area rather than directly on rhizomes. Expect blooms the following season, though some may take an extra year to establish.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is your return policy?

As most of our items are perishable goods (plants, flowers, seeds, tubers, etc.), they cannot be returned. But please get in touch if you have questions or concerns about your specific order.

What is the processing/shipping time?

We strive to process orders within 1–2 days. Shipping with Canada Post is usually within 2–7 days. Dahlia tubers will ship when weather permits. No international shipping at this time.

How should I care for my cut flowers?

Your flowers have been harvested with great care and can last even longer with a little more care. Start by quickly rinsing stems to remove trapped dirt or leaves that may get into the vase water. Use a clean vase to prevent stems (which act like straws) from getting clogged. Change the vase water daily if possible (or every other day). This prevents bacteria buildup that decreases flower life. Feel free to use a purchased floral food in the vase water or make your own with 1 drop bleach, 1 tsp lemon juice, and 1 tsp sugar pre-dissolved in the water. Keep your bouquets out of direct sun and away from ripening fruit. Warm homes and the ethylene gas from fruit decrease flower vase life. You can also try to perk up a recently wilted flower by re-cutting its stem and letting it sit in cooler water up to its neck for a few hours to help relieve a clogged stem from dirt or bacteria.

Ideally you will get a week or more out of your beautiful bouquet before it's ready to compost and you are ready for a new one to bring beauty and joy.

Can I change my dahlia tuber order?

Unfortunately, no. Once an order has been placed, we cannot add or subtract any items. If you wish to add an item, please place a separate order. We can combine orders if you note it in the notes section on the 2nd order. Choose local pickup for the 2nd order so you are not charged shipping twice. It is also helpful to send us an email letting us know to combine orders.

Can I cancel my bouquet subscription?

No, but you can make arrangements with someone in your life to take over your subscription. Perhaps you wish to gift the remainder of the subscription to a friend. Just email us or Instagram message us to let us know someone else will be picking up the subscription. We are also able to provide you with a makeup date if you give us notice of any planned holidays when you are unable to pick up your bouquet. At least four days' notice must be given by email/Instagram message.

Can I request certain bouquets or flowers?

Not as part of our subscription service, but you may be interested in purchasing custom bouquets. Please contact us for details. Custom bouquets start at $50, which allows you to request certain tones or types of dahlias or other flowers we may have blooming at the time.

Do you host farm visits or events?

We are working towards increasing our availability for farm visits. Please sign up for our newsletter to hear about events or workshops in the future.
