I’ve had a lot of people ask me about our greenh

I’ve had a lot of people ask me about our greenhouse lately so I thought I would post a bit about it. We ordered it from Everlast Greenhouses out of BC. Ours is 36 x 16’ (I’d love to have a bigger one, but I think that I would say that regardless of how big it was😊). The company offers the option of getting someone to come help install it. I highly recommend the support. There are a lot of little pieces and even being handy it is not super intuitive where the million little pieces all connect to. With the support it still took an extra two of us to help and install it over 4 days. They did let us know this in advance.
If I was to change anything I would consider having it shorter as I am not utilizing hanging baskets in it at the moment.
The greenhouse stays around 5 degrees or more warmer than outside naturally but it is also sheltered and can be heated so it gives me a good extension on the season. It allows me to extend the season by 4-6 weeks (earlier and later).
I hope to one day built another greenhouse by them attached to the house to allow additional residual heating.

Do you grow bearded Iris? They are a lovely spring plant that grows quite large flowers. In the spring it is important to clean up any mulch or debris around the top of the Iris rhizomes (root crowns) to prevent any rot from setting in. Then you will rewarded with lovely blooms in June!

Do you grow dahlias? Have you seen lenticels on your tubers? Lenticels are little bumps on tubers (and other plants) that allow the gas exchange between the tuber and its surrounding environment. Lenticels become more pronounced when they are moist, often swelling up. This is normal and does not indicate problems for a tuber. If you see this on your tubers, pot up as normal making sure not to overwater when your tuber is young.

When making a fresh cut on a dahlia tuber it is a good idea to let the cut “cure” or dry out for a couple of hours before you store the tuber again. Sometimes that isn’t always practical in which case you can dip the cut in sulphur dust to prevent mold from growing on the tuber. Sometimes some sulphur dust residue is still on tubers when I ship them. In which case you may notice a bit of some white powder residue left on the tuber. It doesn’t harm the dahlia. I don’t use the powder often but occasionally it comes in handy. 😊

Sometimes I get caught up in the beauty of so many flower books. I sometimes have to remind myself of what will actually work for my farm and our style of farming. However….😊 this book had so many lovely container displays that I am excited to try a little bit of container gardening here as well.
