Looking for dahlias? Our online shop opens January 18. Today I am showing some of my favourite shorter dahlia varieties. Some dahlias can grow very tall (see last photo for ‘coralie’ dahlia that can grow 5’+). The following are some of the shorter varieties in our shop that are in the 3’ -3.5’ height range:1-Sebastian. A lovey floriferous peachy dahlia
2-Daisy Duke. A deeper salmon dahlia
3-Doris Duke. A peachier version of Daisy Duke
4-Copper Boy. Lovely multidimensional rusty toned dahlia
5-Dark Spirit. Deep tones great for fall or mix with peach!
6-Valley porcupine. A cute spikey/shimmering dahlia with multiple tones. Good for bridging between colours in bouquets and adding texture
7-Shiloh Noel. This is a larger dinner plate dahlia with lovely flowing petals
8-Seattle. I love the unique multi coloured petals of this one
9-Karma chocolate. A little taller than the rest of these and a great producer as well!
10-Coralie and me!- A much taller dahlia than these. Peaches & cream dahlia! One of the favourite dahlias out there. A great bloom producer and strong plant! I am pleased to be offering lots of this one in our annual dahlia tuber sale this year again. (January 18- make sure you sign up for our newsletter for details).
Peaches and cream looks great with so many other dahlia mixes and colour combos.

Adding texture to your dahlia bouquets and garden!
Though I do love all the beautiful ball formed dahlias, to create interesting bouquets or an eye catching garden it’s important to consider a variety of dahlia forms.Included here are a variety or cactus, novelty and very ‘flowy’ informal decorative forms of dahlias that I enjoy using to add interest to bouquets.1- Clearview Avia and Hollyhill starburst-a fun colour combo and great texture!
2-Labyrinth (the pinwheel like dahlia)- always adds nice flowing movement in bouquets
3-Platinum Blonde has a cute pompom center to add texture to bouquets
4-Rancho-this pale orange water lily dahlia always adds an eye catching form to bouquets
5-Miss Sarah- this dahlia has a bit of lacination on the ends of some petals adding interest to the flower
6-Alfred Grille adds tons of movement and texture to arrangements.
7-Just Peachy adds lovely flowing movement with a tropical feel
8-Jeanne Carter is such a overly buttery yellow cactus dahlia that adds great texture to soft colour bouquets
9-Chilson’s Pride is an oldie but goodie dahlia that also adds interesting texture and is a great producer of blooms
10-Embrace is a newer to me dahlia but I loved using its starburst like blooms in various bouquets last year.Check out blossomhillgardens.ca for more ideas of dahlias to add texture to bouquets. It’s that time of year!
Christmas?
Yes…. and dahlia tuber splitting season!As we near the end of the year I am continuing to split dahlia tuber clumps each day in preparation for our 2025 sale. We have almost 2000 dahlias to split this year so it usually takes me around a month to get through them all.I actually don’t mind the process even though it is a little repetitive (because it only lasts a month). It allows me to catch up on podcasts and audio books while working at a calm, slower pace than the busy growing season.I have also started adding new varieties to our website as well for those of you already previewing sites. I hope to get the dahlia photos and variety updates all done as well in the next few weeks. There should be around another 10 more varieties added soon.Stay tuned for our sale date announcement. Amongst all the pretty holiday photos for Black Friday on Instagram I am posting this one. It is significant because today I start splitting dahlia tubers. Goodbye clean hands. It was a nice little break from dirt by doing paperwork and ordering seeds, but I am never away from dirt too long. It was a pleasure creating so many living works of art for you in 2024.Because our customers are treated to larger, fuller, and carefully designed arrangements we keep our subscription stock limited. Most bearded irises are hardy on our zone 3 flower

Most bearded irises are hardy on our zone 3 flower farm, but I still like to give the plants a little extra protection in case we don’t get much snow when we hit -40 in January 🥶. So after cleaning up the iris beds I will add about 12” of loose straw mulch. You could add other mulch as well like old leaves or plants from garden cleanup. This mulch helps prevent the irises from heaving out during freeze thaw cycles that we tend to get in our area. Especially new irises that don’t have stronger roof structures yet. If you don’t have light mulch you can even add some wood shavings (from pet stores/farm stores) or dirt over the rhizomes. But make sure you remove this and all types of mulch right away in spring. Having heavy wet mulch on rhizomes in spring can sometimes lead to rot.I have not always mulched my irises and most usually do fine.
