Amongst all the pretty holiday photos for Black Friday on Instagram I am posting this one. It is significant because today I start splitting dahlia tubers. Goodbye clean hands. It was a nice little break from dirt by doing paperwork and ordering seeds, but I am never away from dirt too long. Splitting tubers is a job that takes weeks, so I sometimes have to psyche myself up to start. 🌸

Over the next few weeks and into the new year, it will be a nice mix of splitting tubers and updating new dahlia varieties on the website. 😊

Our 2025 bouquet subscriptions are now restocked and ready for another season of beautiful bouquets for customers to enjoy and Christmas gift giving!

Thank you to all my bouquet subscribers over the past year. It was a pleasure creating so many living works of art for you in 2024.

Because our customers are treated to larger, fuller, and carefully designed arrangements we keep our subscription stock limited. Bouquets are filled with a variety of high end flowers and created based on what looks good together. It is our intent that the positive energy and care that goes into these luxury arrangements works its way into our customer’s lives as well 😊

Most bearded irises are hardy on our zone 3 flower

Most bearded irises are hardy on our zone 3 flower farm, but I still like to give the plants a little extra protection in case we don’t get much snow when we hit -40 in January 🥶. So after cleaning up the iris beds I will add about 12” of loose straw mulch. You could add other mulch as well like old leaves or plants from garden cleanup. This mulch helps prevent the irises from heaving out during freeze thaw cycles that we tend to get in our area. Especially new irises that don’t have stronger roof structures yet. If you don’t have light mulch you can even add some wood shavings (from pet stores/farm stores) or dirt over the rhizomes. But make sure you remove this and all types of mulch right away in spring. Having heavy wet mulch on rhizomes in spring can sometimes lead to rot.

I have not always mulched my irises and most usually do fine. However, as we tend to have less snow than we used to I like using the straw as an extra assurance.

Peony splitting time! If you have a large clump o

Peony splitting time! If you have a large clump of peonies that isn’t blooming well for you then it’s time to split it. They are easy to split. Dig about 12” -18” around the center of the peony plant. Splice through the center of the peony using your shovel in order to split the clump. Alternatively, you may split into many more “chunk” of roots depending on how big your plant is (likely not more than 6 chunks). Make sure each root clump has an ‘eye’ on it as this will be next years’ growth. It is ok if you cut off the edges of some roots. This will create more space for the plant to grow next year.
Plant the new clump just under 2” deep. You may wish to add some amendments to your new hole like bone meal and compost to give your peony plant a little boost for next year.
Make sure to water in your peony as well before winter. If perennial roots dry out in the winter they are more prone to dieback.

It’s that time of year! Dahlia digging season. Dahlia tubers cannot freeze so if you live in a colder climate and want to save your dahlias you have to dig them up. Or you can leave them in the ground and treat them like annuals, just letting them rot and add nutrients back into the soil.

Every day with the dahlias is a gift as the weather is so close to frost on these cool nights. This batch is going to our last wedding event of the season. Peonies in September!!! Yup, peonies can store rea

Peonies in September!!! Yup, peonies can store really well wrapped up dry in a fridge. Carefully monitoring humidity and temperature helps, but I was a little slacking here and it still worked. The peonies don’t look quite as good as if they were fresh but it is nice to see how well they can save if you are trying to save them for a special event. I still have a few in the fridge I am going to leave for another week or two to see how far I can push them. Again, vase life and quality is reduced, but right now I experimenting with seeing how much it is reduced and if it is still worth it. (So far, I think so!)

Dahlia sports! A sport is a flower that shows a unique colour trait that is not repeated in the rest of the plant. This flower is a jowey Paula dahlia that is exhibiting some unique white petals.
The second photo is a Joey Winnie sport which was quite unique as half of the flower was purple!

I always enjoy these unique flowers that will not repeat no matter how lovely they are.
