A lovely harvest of dahlias tonight. The dahlias have been actually enjoying the cooler rainy weather we have been having. Every day with the dahlias is a gift as the weather is so close to frost on these cool nights. This batch is going to our last wedding event of the season. Oranges, burgundies and purple lilac colours. #blossomhillgardens #dahliaseason #dahliascanada #dahliafarm

Peonies in September!!! Yup, peonies can store rea

Peonies in September!!! Yup, peonies can store really well wrapped up dry in a fridge. Carefully monitoring humidity and temperature helps, but I was a little slacking here and it still worked. The peonies don’t look quite as good as if they were fresh but it is nice to see how well they can save if you are trying to save them for a special event. I still have a few in the fridge I am going to leave for another week or two to see how far I can push them. Again, vase life and quality is reduced, but right now I experimenting with seeing how much it is reduced and if it is still worth it. (So far, I think so!)

Dahlia sports! A sport is a flower that shows a unique colour trait that is not repeated in the rest of the plant. This flower is a jowey Paula dahlia that is exhibiting some unique white petals.
The second photo is a Joey Winnie sport which was quite unique as half of the flower was purple!

I always enjoy these unique flowers that will not repeat no matter how lovely they are.

We don’t need to figure out all the details yet, but it ensures that your date is secured as we are already booking for next summer. We only book a limited number of weddings through June -September to ensure the best quality and service for your special day.

This week’s bouquet subscribers have lots of col

This week’s bouquet subscribers have lots of colour variety! With the dahlias, zinnias and sunflowers in full force there are lots of flower and colour choices this week.
(All flowers grown and arranged on our farm)

Each week bouquets are dropped off at our subscription pickup location in Sherwood park (Confetti Sweets bake shop by Costco). Customers simply grab their bouquets on Thursday afternoons/evenings and then enjoy some extra beauty and joy in their lives all week. Lamont county subscribers get their bouquets delivered fresh to their door on Mondays.

Thrips super suck on dahlias! They are a very sma

Thrips super suck on dahlias! They are a very small bug that feeds off the dahlia plant destroying or heavily damaging the flower. They are more prevalent in hot weather so usually they slow down by mid august and September with cooler nights. This reel explains some of the ways I deal with thrips naturally. You can also use some natural sprays like neem oil to kill thrips but those also kill beneficial insects that might be eating the thrips so I opt against them. Usually I only have to deal with thrips for a couple of weeks during hot July weather and some years are not so bad. I hope this helps if you are battling these pesky bugs!

I use to be a little intimidated using bold colour

I use to be a little intimidated using bold colours like orange or burgundy in flower arranging. But after growing and arranging for the past 5 years and reading a few more flower books I find that I enjoy these deep bold colours more often. (Sarah Raven speaks often in her podcasts and books about using jewel tones in the garden). I still like the muted pinks and pastels that my many of my customers seem to enjoy, but every now and then a splash of drama is nice. 😊

All flowers are grown on our zone 3 flower farm without chemical fertilizers or pesticide/herbicide use. 🌸
